Disabled children have to face every kind of social struggle. They are considered as burdens of the family and society. As a result, they are deprived of their fundamental rights- the right to education, the right to express their views, the right to freedom of thought, the right to protection from abuse, the right to good standard of living.

CHILDREN SAHARA GRIHA
(Disabled Children Hostel)

INTRODUCTION OF GRIHA:

Disabled children have to face every kind of social struggle. They are considered as burdens of the family and society. As a result, they are deprived of their fundamental rights- the right to education, the right to express their views, the right to freedom of thought, the right to protection from abuse, the right to good standard of living. Each disabled child, like other able children should get an opportunity to go to school without being discriminated, abused or oppressed. To deprive the children of proper health service and education is to violate their rights. With a view to providing wheel chair bound disabled children with education, protection and nutrition and health service, this Griha is going to be established at Jorpati-5, Katmandu by a team of highly committed disabled people to working for the empowerment of the disabled.

Objectives:

•  To provide the wheel chair bound children, whose body from the waist to the foot can't function and who are incontinent of urine and stool, with education in hostel.

•  To enable them to get scholarships in schools.

•  To provide the aged/ adult disabled with job oriented trainings in order to improve their living standard.

•  To conduct different skills developing programs.

•  To provide free medical check up and treatment.

•  To provide them with artificial limbs, cal lifer, wheel chair, crutches and the spare parts.

•  To set up library for the disabled and poor children.

•  To provide secure and homely residential care to them regardless of race, sex and religion.

Programs to be conducted by Ghriha:

This Griha will conduct a residential shelter for the wheel chair bound children at Jorpati VDC -5, Katmandu , by taking a house on lease. Nearly ten disabled children (5- 8 ages) from poor and rural village, who are war-affected, will be sheltered and they will be admitted to the nearest school for formal education. This Griha prepares the background of the children for formal education. Preference for the admission to the Griha will be given to those who are helpless and who are orphans from rural areas and disadvantaged group. Adult disabled will be equipped with the abilities and confidence to improve their living standard.

REASON FOR CONDUCTING THIS GRIHA:

We have seen or read many heart breaking news about the disabled children/ people in rural areas, who are confined to the four walls or tethered with shackles like an animal. They are highly despised or harshly treated like animals.

In the remote areas, the disabled children/ people are considered as burden or as a matter of ignominy. Such children are subject to discrimination, oppression and banishment from home. Children, whose parts from the waist to the foot can't function and who are incontinent of urine and stool, are neglected by their parents and other family members. In spite of their eligibility for matriculation at school, they are not admitted to schools for formal education. The teachers blame that they can't control urine and stool which as a result not only litters the classrooms but also gives off offensive smell.

Sitting for a long time at a place and leaving stool and urine will ultimately cause wound at their buttocks which gradually increases. If the children are not properly cared, they will die from such wound.

We are disabled ourselves and have come across the ordeals of life in the society. Consequently, we are highly committed to enabling and empowering the disabled people like us so that they can lead a normal life and improve their living standards.

We all feel the necessity of such a shelter where such disabled children can get education, protection, nutrition medical support etc. It's the reason which drives us to open the Griha soon.

ACHIEVEMENT AFTER CONDUCTING THIS GRIHA:

Wheel chair bound children from poor and disadvantaged groups will get education in a congenial and safe environment. Adult disabled (age 18 above) will get timely vocational trainings which, we do believe, will enable them to be self reliant. Disabled people will get job opportunities/ placements in this Griha and they can do the work on their own. Thus, they can earn their living.

To conduct this program, the following policies will be adopted

•  Training for knitting sweaters will be given to the poor, jobless and hardworking women who live near this Griha. Orders for sweaters will be handed over to the trained women so that they not only earn their living by themselves but also help this Griha run smoothly. The income, that are made by selling the ordered goods, will be deposited to the bank in order to run the program.

•  The products (handicrafts) that are made by the disabled people will be sold in the national and international markets.

•  Income generating programs/ trainings will be conducted.
